Exploring hormones’ role in breastmilk production for evidence-based breastfeeding support

Dr. Fadil Hannan is leading a multi-faceted project at the University of Oxford Nuffield Department of Women’s & Reproductive Health Medical Sciences Division, investigating the molecular endocrinology of human lactation (i.e., the hormonal mechanisms or chemicals that control and regulate cells and organs in the production of breastmilk).

The project’s initiation also marks the first step toward the establishment of a lactation and breastfeeding research hub that will be located at the Oxford Women’s Centre, John Radcliffe Hospital and endowed by FLRF.

Called the Larsson-Rosenquist Foundation Oxford Centre for the Endocrinology of Human Lactation (LRF OCEHL), the permanent research hub will investigate the hormonal mechanisms that work to ensure successful milk production, with the aim to produce better and more evidence-based support for breastfeeding mothers.
