Ghana adopts INTERGROWTH-21st

Ghana has adopted the INTERGROWTH 21^st preterm growth standards and feeding protocols (IP21) to address one of the nation’s causes of mortality for infants under 5 years of age: preterm birth.

Implementation has begun within the National Catholic Health Service facilities and plans are underway to scale up to the entire country.

The First Lady of the Republic of Ghana, Her Excellency Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, and the Ministry of Health have endorsed the IP21 standards and are collaborating to support the national implementation agenda.

These globally validated resources can support the optimal growth and healthy development of preterm infants through breastfeeding and growth monitoring, and help clinicians and parents avoid overfeeding, reduce the risk of childhood overweight and obesity, and improve the early detection of infants with suboptimal growth.
